The winning works for the Universal Design Award were revealed on December 3rd, 2009.

There were 782 participants. Fifteen won commendations for their creative and refreshing designs.

The winning designs for the Universal Design Award were revealed on December 3rd, 2009. The top works were simple yet creative. The first prize went to a “U-Pad”, which is an easy-to-use U-shaped scrub sponge. The second prize went to a ladle holder, that enables a soup ladle to stay fixed on the pot.

The 4th Universal Design Competition officially began on May 7th. The event is sponsored by the Free Universe Education Foundation and co-sponsored by Taipei City Government’s Department of Urban Development. We welcome designs by creative artists that will help create more user-friendly kitchens.

This year’s theme is Kitchen Activity. The kitchen is an important place in our everyday lives, but accidents occur while we are cooking or washing the dishes. The purpose of this year’s contest is to create tools that will make life in the kitchen more safe, convenient and fun.

A great city has many legends, stories of unforgettable people that are shared from generation to generation. A hundred years from now, I hope that our city is not just known for one of the world’s tallest buildings, but rather for being a land where people can fulfill their dreams.

In the 1980s, Tang Feng-chen came to Taipei all alone in his wheelchair from his hometown in Chiayi. He looked all over to find a place to live, but had a very hard time. It wasn’t the landlords that rejected him, but the living spaces, which were full of barriers. He looked at over 20 apartments before he found one that was fairly livable.Now in the 21st century, Tang is coordinating the efforts of the government, corporations and academics, as well as Taiwan’s creative industries, to make Taiwan a more livable place. In 2004, Tang established the Free Universe Education Foundation, to open a new door for designers to use their creativity.

China Times 2009-07-11/ Hung Xiang-he/ Hualien

Beipu Elementary School student Wang Xuanhan has a bone disease that prevents him from being able to hold a pen in his hand. He can only use his mouth to write. His parents contacted Free Universe Education Foundation Chairman Tang Feng-chen who found a special pen in Japan, the U wing pen, that can enable Wang to write whatever he wants. Tang, who is confined to a wheelchair, brought this special pen to Wang yesterday.

A toy car that dices garlic – put the garlic cloves inside and roll the car on the table. Kids think its fun and adults love it because it dices the garlic for you. This year’s Universal Design theme is Kitchen Activity, a call to bring ingenuity to the kitchen.

Love has no borders! Hualien Bei Pu Elementary School student Wang Huan-han has bone disease which prevents him from being able to write with his hand. But his family found a way through this paper’s “My Little Revolution” article, which introduced Universal Design. Through the article, they contacted the Japanese Tripod Design Company who sent a U-wing pen that enables Wang to write.
