Love has no borders! Hualien Bei Pu Elementary School student Wang Huan-han has bone disease which prevents him from being able to write with his hand. But his family found a way through this paper’s “My Little Revolution” article, which introduced Universal Design. Through the article, they contacted the Japanese Tripod Design Company who sent a U-wing pen that enables Wang to write.
Wang Huan-han is a 2nd grade student at Bei Pu Elementary School. He is physically-challenged and is unable to move around by himself and cannot hold a pen. He could only hold a pen with his mouth. But his father Wang Chi-chang said that they never gave up on him. They know that he really wants to learn and read. His teacher Lin Su-chen suggested they find a way to enable him to write, such as holding the pen in his mouth. Since he needed to write with his mouth, they looked all over for a pen that would be suitable for him, as pencils might be poisonous. His father also tried the pens out for himself. He said some were too short, and make you cross-eyed when you write. Some were too long and hard to control. When his son used pens, he often gets them all wet with his saliva.
 
On February 21, this paper’s article “My Little Revolution” introduced the Free Universe Education Foundation and how the foundation’s chairman Tang Feng-chen is promoting universal design. After reading the article, Wang’s aunt started looking for a pen for her nephew. “This was really tough to find!”, she said. She spent a month on the Internet and discovered that Taiwan does not sell the U-wing pen. She asked her friends in Japan to help, to no avail. Then with the help of Tang, she wrote a letter to Tripod Design, and the Chairman Nakagawa Satoshi asked his son and daughter to bring the pen with them on their visit to Taiwan for a design exhibition. “I’m going to use this on my next test!” Wang said. The U-wing pen is a treasure to Wang, but he’s a little afraid the ink will run out. Someday, he wants to meet Mr. Nakagawa Satoshi in person someday – to thank him.
