Safe kitchen tools are a great way for kids to help mom cook!

A toy car that dices garlic – put the garlic cloves inside and roll the car on the table. Kids think its fun and adults love it because it dices the garlic for you. This year’s Universal Design theme is Kitchen Activity, a call to bring ingenuity to the kitchen.

Universal Design products can be used by anyone – no matter how tall or small, old or young. Free Universe Education Foundation Chairman Tang Feng-chen says the concept shows its interest and support for a broad range of users: “A contest that shows people care.” With this year’s kitchen theme, Tang hopes that people will design products to make the kitchen a safer and more pleasant place.

In the press conference that kicked off the contest, famous chef A-bao was put up against a 4-year old boy using some universally designed kitchen tools in a contest. A-bao used his fast and quick moves to peel the garlic,  while little Joey put the garlic in a tube, rubbed it, and the peel fell off. While A-bao was dicing the garlic, Joey put the garlic cloves in the toy car, rolled it, and voila – a bunch of finely diced garlic. The kid was having a great time, especially since he finished faster than A-bao. In a following trick, he turned the handle of the hydroextractor and the vegetables were all dry.

The sponsor said that most universally designed products come from Japan and the US, and are not inexpensive. They hope that this contest can inspire new products in Taiwan that can help cooking be safer, quicker and easier.
